Mike Nall, Master Pitching Coach
Coach Nall is a former Division 1 player and pitching coach. He started his coaching career at Valparaiso in 2003, then moved to the University of Illinois Chicago in 2004 where he coached for the next 7 years.
While at UIC, the team won 6 regular season Horizon League Championships and won the Horizon League Tournament 3 times. Under his coaching, UIC led the Horizon League in ERA five times and had 3 pitchers selected in the MLB draft.
In his seven seasons, the team grabbed three NCAA tournament births, picking up wins over baseball powerhouses #9 Long Beach State and Dallas Baptist.
Prior to becoming a coach, Mike attended Schaumburg HS where he led his team to a State Championship his senior season, throwing a no-hitter in the quarterfinal vs Clemente HS. He was named All-State and was chosen by the Marlins in the 1997 MLB draft.
Mike opted to play college baseball at UIC, and eventually transferred to Northwestern where he was selected All-Big 10 and Academic All-Big 10 in 2001. He earned his degree at Northwestern from the School of Education & Social Policy with a major in Secondary Education, and a concentration in Mathematics.
That same year he was again selected in the MLB draft, this time chosen by the Phillies. Two seasons later he left the playing field to become a coach.
In 2010, he decided to stop traveling the country as UIC’s recruiting coordinator and joined De La Salle Institute as a teacher and pitching coach. Mike taught math for 7 years, and was named Teacher of the Year for 2014-15.
As an assistant coach, he helped the baseball program to 3 Chicago Catholic League Division Titles, as well as an IHSA Regional and a Sectional Title. He sent 4 student-athletes on to pitch Division 1 college baseball.
We’re beyond pleased that he has decided to join our staff.
